Balancing a protected site?

Hello,

If I'm trying to balance a site that is protected by basic authentication (the apache username / password authentication by htpasswd) then will haproxy think the site is down if it doesn't return a normal response because it couldn't authenticate and if so is there a way to pass a user name and password to use so that haproxy can get passed the authentication part and get the response it needs from the server to know that its still up?

I'm using haproxy 1.3 thanks.
