Have you tested the setup? What were the results? I haven't ever tried a configuration with haproxy like that one, but you should have no problems with the proper network infrastructure (you will have to configure routes and so).
I think the point is using the same VIP for the balancer and the backend servers. It's a matter of just trying it and debug a little bit to see what's going on.
