Just as a data note, I'm running HAProxy on a VM under Xen OSS, with 2 VCPU's (Xeon 5430).. our peak load so far was around 800 connections/s, with cpu load of less than 10%. (This machine is also acting as an iptables firewall with connection tracking for the backends.)
